Arthroscopy & Sports Medicine
Sports medicine is a subspecialty which deals
with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injuries resulting
from participating in athletic events. The most common among these
include injuries to the knees, ankles, shoulders and wrists.
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure commonly
used to treat sports injuries and other joint disorders. Utilizing
a pencil-sized instrument called an arthroscope, which is inserted
through a small incision, the surgeon has a clear view of the inside
of the joint, allowing him or her to thoroughly examine the interior
of the joint and determine the scope of the problem. The surgeon
then inserts surgical instruments through other small incisions to
remove or repair damaged tissue. Arthroscopy is a highly effective
and relatively simple procedure for the accurate diagnosis and treatment
of joint problems.
