RHEUMATOLOGY

Dr. Sandra Horvath-Dori is a physician qualified by additional training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other diseases of the joints, muscles and bones. Her role as a rheumatologist is to diagnose, treat and medically manage individuals with rheumatic disorders. She assumes the responsibility of caring for patients with rheumatologic problems that are often complex, and interacts with the patient and family as a resource for health information and as a collaborator with other health care providers.

Dr. Horvath-Dori assesses the following:

  • Signs and symptoms of systemic involvement
  • Joint disorders
  • Need for orthopaedic or corrective intervention
  • Need for hospitalization for medical management
  • Level of independence
  • Result of advanced laboratory and radiological examinations
  • Necessity of referrals to other health care providers

Areas of medical concentration include:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease that causes pain, stiffness, swelling, and limitation in the motion and function of multiple joints. Though joints are the principal body parts affected by RA, inflammation can develop in other organs as well.
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosis (Lupus) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin, joints, kidneys, lungs, nervous system and/or other organs of the body. The most common symptoms include skin rashes and arthritis, often accompanied by fatigue and fever.
  • Osteoporosis is a common bone disease that affects both men and women, usually as they grow older. The most health-threatening consequence of osteoporosis is bone fracture. Spine and hip fractures especially may lead to chronic pain, long-term disability and even death. The major goal of treating osteoporosis is to prevent fractures.
  • Inflammatory Muscle Disease is a group of illnesses that includes polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM), and inclusion body myositis (IBM).
